Eat Your Makeup!
The natural makeup movement has burgeoned over the last few years, as more and more women have started questioning just what compounds they’re putting on their skins and into their bodies. However, when it comes to natural makeup, it can be hard to know which brands to trust. While many products claim to be natural, they may still contain synthetic ingredients, whose effects on the body aren’t fully known.
This is why Nourished Life founder Irene Falcone began her website, initially with a thousand dollars and a few natural beauty products sourced from the States. She was concerned that “Women put on up to 500 different chemicals on their bodies before they leave the house in the morning, which I think is shocking. Some women have no idea what they’re putting into their bodies”
While natural makeup was then a fringe concern, and most of the products near impossible to source, Irene has been proven to be on the right side of history. “I have to say, I was called ‘crazy’, ‘ahead of my time’ and a ‘silly hippie’ by a lot of people. There were times when I thought ‘This is crazy, there is no way I could quit my corporate life and sell my house and give up everything to pursue this’, because nobody believed it, but I did it anyway.”
However, Irene has been proven to be on the right side of history, as natural beauty has exploded in the last few years, with everyone talking about “clean beauty”, as women have become more aware of the potential effects of some synthetic chemicals that are often found in makeup. The more careful people have become about what they put on their skin, the more popular natural makeup has become.
As Irene has commented, “I remember about five years ago I wrote a blog post about perfumes and how they’re not great for you and I got hammered for it.
“I put a new one up recently — exactly the same content, just with some updated statistics — and now we have thousands and thousands of comments from people supporting it. I think social media has driven the awareness of these chemicals among women. It’s amazing.”
But how do you choose? The old mantra used to be, “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your body”.
The biggest difference between “natural” and “synthetic” makeup is the ingredients. Most synthetic makeup products contain potentially harmful chemicals including parabens, phthalates, and SLS. According to studies, your skin can absorb up to 64% of what you place on it. If you find this concerning, it’s time to go natural.
Unfortunately, due to lack of regulation in the beauty industry, many products labelled “natural” actually still contain these synthetic chemicals. We don’t all have time to pore through the small print listing ingredients in our makeup, but you can trust that every product stocked by Nourished Life is 100 per cent natural.
